I get a lot of people in to see me that have back pain who have been told that they have disc bulges, herniated discs, crumbling and degenerated spines.*
Hell, just hearing those words is enough to make us want to wrap ourselves in cotton wool for the rest of our lives.
But did you know that research on lower back pain suggest that the amount of disc and nerve damage rarely relate to the amount of pain experienced.
So what does this mean?
Well, many of you sitting here reading this will have disc bulges and squashed nerves but still not feel any pain. These changes in tissues are normal. And they don't have to hurt. We can have all these so called 'degenerations' but still function perfectly well. They do not have to affect our life.
So why then, if so many of us have these issues are we not all in pain all of the time?
Simple. If there is no pain then it means that these changes are not perceived as a threat by your brain.
Now that being said, the opposite is also true. We can have a perfectly healthy spine but feel excruciating pain 24/7.
Why? Because no matter what is going on within our bodies, it is the brain which decides whether something hurts or not. This is true 100% of the time. No exceptions!
