Sorry guys but this is one just for the ladies.
One of the things I ask my female clients about is their menstrual cycle especially when it comes to pain and tightness.
You see, there are certain times of the month that we have less pain tolerance as well as other things going on.
Let me explain. Think THAT time of the month. For many women this means period pains. Period pains will affect how we sit, stand and move as we try different positions to ease them. The other problems is that when we have our cycle, it is part of our evolution to want to nest and 'hibernate'. For me that's usually on a sofa with a blanket!
Sitting a lot more than we usually do as well as the discomfort that we have can can cause lower back to tighten up (sometimes referred to as a low grade muscle spasm).
For me personally, this tightness occurs more on one side than the other which results in me having a leg length difference. This Leg length difference has a knock on effect which cases tightnss in my glute (on one side), sciatic pain (on the same side) AND knee pain (again, on the same side).
Ladies if you get pains during your time of the month you may find that it's not just limited to the usual places. The compensations we use to try and ease the pain may lead to other issues too. It's not surprising then that there is an increase in the injuries of women at their time of the month.
Add relaxin into the equation (the hormone which relaxes all your joints in preparation for pregnancy and labour) and you will see that maybe now isn't the time for going flat out with your training. A bit of TLC would be more beneficial at this time.
Just something for you to think about.
The other thing is that I have connected is that my sciatic nerve tightens and I get knee pain during ovulation too. In fact my knee pain is what helps me identify where I am in my cycle!
This isn’t something we need to worry about. The whole point of this post is for you to realise the effects of your cycle on your body, to help explain why you may get pain sometimes and not others. And why you may get pains in places other than the areas you are already familiar with.
Self-awareness is everything!
