"I need a back and shoulder massage as I have so many 'knots' in that area"
I get told this over and over again as this is an area that so many people have issues with. They come to me and point to their upper traps and quite often rhomboids.
So when I tell them that their upper back is not the problem I tend to get a confused expression staring back at me.
Then I explain that their upper back is simply the victim.
The real issue is from the muscles at the front of the shoulder and chest which are overstretching those muscles at the back, thus causing micro trauma and subsequent 'knots'.
So what should they really be doing?
Well massaging those 'knots' out with a tennis ball or seeing a massage therapist is great for short term relief but what you need to be doing is directing your energy on fixing the cause of the problem, not just the symptom.
Quite often this relates to those muscles at the front (pectoral area) that are the ones that need to be released in order to take the pressure off the back.
But one more thing...if your pelvis and spine are not working correctly then they may be causing the issue in the pectoral area so in that case it would be wise to start with that first.
Just something else for you to think about.
